The Ultimate Sacrifice: How Design Can Hurt Your Search Engine Rankings

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Everyone wants a pretty website. Everyone also wants to be #1 on google. It is very difficult to achieve both with a new website unless you are willing to make a few sacrifices.

In order to index and rank your website, search engines such as google usually use programs called “bots” or “spiders” to crawl the internet and read the code of all of the websites it runs across. A search engine spider uses the links throughout a website to find all of the pages in that website, as well as find external websites that a particular page might link to, and it does this by reading the code of your website. This entire process is automated, and most search engines use their own unique algorithm’s to determine the importance of keywords found throughout the code of your website. (more…)

Top 10 Favorite Firefox Add-Ons for Webby People

Monday, February 8th, 2010

I can’t tell you enough how much firefox has improved my life. Not only is it 10000 times better than Internet Explorer just on its own, but the thousands add-ons you can install make life so much easier! You can find an add-on for just about anything you could ever want from your browser, but here is a list of my top 10 favorite Firefox webby add-ons:

1. Read it later: this add-on lets you… well… read it later. Its a bookmarking tool that lets you save a page in a list so you can read it at your convenience and then take it off your  list when you are done. Its much more efficient than regular bookmarking, and if you are an avid web browser, you NEED this add-on! (more…)

… And She’s Back

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

I’ve been meaning to write a blog post for awhile, but I had convinced myself to wait until I transferred my blog to a new format… and it took me three months to get around to it. Hopefully now that I’ve finally gotten around to it I will find more time to write.

Welcome to the new blog. It is fully integrated into the WBK domain which makes things easier, and thanks to the wonders of Wordpress, I made it match my website design and imported my old blog posts as well.

So what is there to blog about these days?

First of all, October 22, 2009 is the official date of the Windows 7 OS release, which means Vista will finally be a horror of the past. If anyone is considering purchasing a new PC this year, it might be best to wait so that you can get the new “What Vista Was Supposed to Be” Windows operating system.

Next, Apple recently released the latest Iphone, which made me squirm in my seat a little bit. I was once again tempted to switch carriers so I can finally call myself an Iphone user, but oh how I love Verizon. Interestingly enough though, the AT&T contract is scheduled to expire next year AND Verizon plans to update their networks to GSM next year… hmmm… is there hope? If the stars align correctly, I’m hoping by the end of next year I will be using an Iphone on Verizon’s network. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

Finally, Microsoft released Internet Explorer 8 a couple of months back. It seems to carry more of the Vista-like incessent security reminders than 7 did. I find this irratating and mostly want to scream “go away” at it. Luckily I only use IE for website testing purposes… firefox is still by far #1 in my book.
